A Quick Guide: Including Novel Overview & Love Interest Profiles Worksheets

The two things that hook readers into romance novels are the premise and the characters.

Why is this? Because a juicy premise that forces two people* who are clearly perfect for one another (or at least have the hots for each other) but have massive hang-ups that they need to overcome is so much fun to read.

So, the most important things to figure out before you start writing are your premise and your love interests.

Once you have a solid understanding of these concepts, you’ll be in a much better place to map your meet cute (i.e., plan your novel) and actually write it.

*Or more if polyamory is your thing. Or a person and…something else if monster romance is your thing. No judgement here.

  • draft a brief summary of your novel premise
  • create profiles of your main characters (a.k.a. love interests)
  • understand why your love interests are perfect for each other
  • get a clear view of what’s keeping your love interests apart.

Don’t worry! It’s not an outline. There’s no place to write out scene descriptions. If you’re a pantser, you’re safe to use this tool.
